There are no current plans to replace the recently removed picnic shelters at Fort George Park.

The shelters were installed in the early 1980s, said public works director Bill Gaal, and had "reached the end of their useful life."

Removing the two covers located near the spray park and tennis courts was a project slated for this year as per the city's capital plan, with a budget of $175,000.

The wooden structures had begun to show signs of rotting and the roofs were missing shingles, said Gaal.

"If you looked at those shelters they're in quite disrepair and so it's just not worth repairing," he said. "There's nothing in the capital plan for 2015 to replace them."

The picnic areas will be outfitted with concrete pads and tables.

"There just won't be a cover," said Gaal.

The main picnic shelter used to be rented out for use, but the revenue the city brought in from that was minimal, said Gaal.
