The number of people holding down jobs in Prince George rose by 600 in July, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers.

The total now stands at 51,100, as the figure remained above the 50,000 mark for the fifth month in a row. The record is 52,500 reached in September 2012.

Ironically, the unemployment rate also rose, to 5.7 per cent from 5.4 per cent in June, as the number of people without jobs but seeking work rose by 200 to 3,100 while those of working age not participating in the workforce declined by 800 to 16,400.

The unemployment rate is also higher than it was a year ago when it stood at 4.5 per cent. However, just 49,000 people were working while 19,400 of working age were unemployed and not seeking work. The number of unemployed looking for jobs stood at 2,300.

The figures are based on a three-month rolling average and do not say how many are working full-time and part-time.
