Museum set for P. G. visit

The Royal BC Museum is teaming up with the Prince George Public Library for a pair of nature talks next month.

"To be able to host experts from the museum, to have botanical and entomological experts coming to our library is really a thrill for us," said Andrea Palmer, the library's communications coordinator.

The museum regularly partners with resource company Teck to send researchers across the province to collect and study. This year, a portion of the field work is in the Prince George region.

On Aug. 2, the province's foremost spider expert - the museum's entomolgy senior collections manager Claudia Copley - and her team will share their findings in the eight-legged field.

The presentation, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Bob Harkins branch of the library, will teach participants about spider biology and which species of spider can be found in the area. Attendees are invited to bring along any spiders they would like to have identified.

On Aug. 9, the Royal BC Museum curator of botany Dr. Ken Marr will discuss his team's botanical explorations of alpine habitats in northern B.C., which is one of the province's most poorly documented areas. Museum botanists have been collecting plant specimens in these difficult-to-reach locations for the past 12 years.

The illustrated presentation, also beginning at 3 p.m., will feature the methods used to collect and preserve plant specimens.

Both presentations are aimed toward an older demographic, but adults and children alike will learn something, Palmer said.
