The city is rejigging the landscape of a troublesome park to try and crack down on criminal activity.

Millennium Park, at the corner of First Avenue and George Street, will undergo safety improvements this week based on recommendations by the Prince George RCMP and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design committee.

"The Community Policing and Downtown Enforcement Units have been diligent in identifying areas of concern and conveying those messages and recommendations to city administration," said city manager Beth James in a press release.

The work involves reducing the size of the existing berm, removing trees and replacing low shrubbery and trees to minimize areas where criminal activity may occur.

"The current landscape provides areas for criminal activity to transpire, making detection and apprehension difficult," said Prince George RCMP acting officer in charge, Brad Anderson.

Carla Johnston, executive director of Downtown Prince George, praised the initiative, saying that public spaces are "critical to the ongoing economic and cultural development" of the downtown area.

"It all starts with safety, so we are thrilled with the improvements coming to this urban park," she said.
