Library earns two awards

The Gay-Straight Alliance at the Prince George Public Library got a merit award from the B.C. Library Association for service to the region's teens.

The Gay-Straight Alliance at the Prince George Public Library got a merit award from the B.C. Library Association for service to the region's teens.

The group is the only one of its kind not affiliated with a school in Prince George and invites youth into a teens-only environment to join in discussions, address issues and hear speakers on subjects important to them.

Don't Read These Books is a Freedom to Read Week campaign that won the advocacy or marketing category merit award from the provincial library association. The campaign had eight banned or challenged books literally bound in chains that needed to be bailed out and people could raise the bail money so the book could be checked out of the library and read again.

Awareness was raised for the issue of challenged materials.

The awards were accepted on behalf of the library's acting chief librarian Janet Marren at the library association's annual general meeting Friday.
