The city is asking for patience from residents wanting to get out and stretch their legs on public fields.

"We know everyone has a little spring fever and wants to get out there and enjoy the sunshine, but our fields are at a very vulnerable stage at this time of year," said the city's parks supervisor Sean LeBrun, in a press release. " A bunch of people having fun can ruin the ground for others including organized sports groups if they go out too early."

City sports and recreation fields are technically closed until the turf has a chance to dry out, with a potential opening date of May 10.

Local sporting community officials have been contacted to ensure they won't be hitting the more than 50 baseball diamonds and football and soccer fields until the sun has a chance to dry out the ground, said LeBrun.

"The city doesn't have enough staff to patrol the fields, or place 'closed' signs on every school field and ball diamond," LeBrun said. "At this time of year, a little patience and common sense can pay big dividends for the rest of the sporting season."
