The Western Hockey League announced Wednesday it has scheduled a special meeting for April 30 in Calgary for its board of governors to vote on whether to approve the sale of the Prince George Cougars franchise.

The Western Hockey League announced Wednesday it has scheduled a special meeting for April 30 in Calgary for its board of governors to vote on whether to approve the sale of the Prince George Cougars franchise.

The league confirmed a deal is now in place between Greg Pocock of EDGEPRO Sports & Entertainment Ltd., to buy the team from current Cougars owner Rick Brodsky. Pocock, who formed EDGEPRO to purchase the franchise, heads a group of local business investors that also includes current NHL defencemen Eric Brewer and Dan Hamhuis.

The WHL also announced Regina Pats owners Russ and Diane Parker have agreed to sell the franchise to a group of Regina businessmen that includes Anthony Marquart, head of Queen City Sports & Entertainment Group.

Both ownership transfers will require two-thirds majority approval by the board of governors at the April 30 meeting. Assuming that approval is granted, the deals will close later in May and the new owners would then be in position to take control of the franchises.

The WHL will stage its bantam draft in Calgary on May 1.

A public ceremony to introduce of the new ownership group is being planned for CN Centre on Monday, May 12.
