University Way was closed down early Wednesday and the B.C. RCMP's explosives disposal unit was brought in from Vancouver to deal with an improvised explosive device found near a garbage can and light standard.
The road was reopened shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, about 12 hours after police responded to a call of shots fired in the area, suggesting that there were two bombs involved.
"Someone heard a bang and then we found one that seemingly hadn't exploded and we destroyed that one," Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said.
Classes at UNBC remained unaffected although students, professors and staff were restricted to using Tyner Boulevard to reach the campus.
"Our response was necessary in this situation," said Insp. Brad Anderson, operations officer for the Prince George detachment. "Our first priority will always be the safety of our officers and the general public."
The area was searched by a police service dog and the forensic identification section was called to gather evidence.
Near the time of the incident, a person on a bike was seen in the area of the improvised explosive device and police are looking to identify this person.
