Northern Health has saved more than $1.1 million thanks in part to workplace health and safety programs put in place over the past five years.

From 2010 to 2015, the health authority saw a decrease in the duration of lost time for WorkSafeBC claims, it said in a release Wednesday. That translated to a decrease in the amount of overall claim dollars. Those programs cover violence prevention, a workplace health and safety orientation for new hires and their managers, improving inspection guidelines, a work alone check-in program and a WorkSafeBC High Risk Strategy.

"We want our staff and physicians to work in a safe environment, and for them to know that there is support available if they are injured at work," said Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health board chair in a statement. "A focus on our people is a pillar of the Northern Health Strategic Plan and these results are a reflection of the work that is being done."
