Westjet’s direct flights between Prince George and Calgary are being grounded and its service between Prince George and Vancouver will be reduced by one flight daily beginning on March 5, the company confirmed Monday.

The reductions also eliminate daily direct flights between Terrace and Calgary.

“With the downturn in the economy we are seeing less demand for travel to and from energy markets into areas across Canada, including Prince George and Terrace,” Westjet spokeswoman Lauren Stewart said in an email.

The carrier is also reducing services between Edmonton and Calgary and between Abbotsford and Edmonton and cancelling direct flights between Edmonton and Nanaimo and Kamloops.

Central Mountain Air suspended its Prince George to Calgary service in October.

In June 2013, CMA began providing the service on a five-day-per-week basis and soon added a sixth day. But in early 2014, Westjet jumped into the game with a comparable service.

Air Canada Express will continue to offer five daily flights between Prince George and Vancouver.

“We have no immediate plans to change our schedule, but do review all flights in our worldwide schedule regularly to ensure that supply is appropriate to demand and that profitability targets are met,” Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in an email.
