A malfunctioning piece of equipment has affected some flights at the Prince George Airport.

The Nav Canada weather observation system went down last night, said spokesperson Ron Singer.

"We have the part in place and we have a technologist on his way to Prince George right now," Singer said. "We hope to have the system restored sometime this evening."

The equipment records critical information for the safety of flight, said airport spokesperson Lindsay Cotter.

"And without that information, under certain conditions, aircraft are unable to land," she said.

The issue is not affecting all aircraft. There are cancelled Westjet flights, but delayed Central Mountain Air trips are due to crew schedules, Cotter said, adding other airport operations are continuing as normal.

Those travelling and picking up passengers are encouraged to check the status of flights at the airport's website, pgairport.ca.
