Volunteer firefighters spent their Sunday night battling a blaze that got away after a Pineview area homeowner lit a brush pile despite the windy weather.

The initial call for help went out shortly after 5 p.m. and some 45 firefighters from six halls were eventually called to the scene scene between Johnson and Cummings Roads

"The brush pile was up against the bush line and it burned into the bush," said Pineview Volunteer Fire Department chief Lyle Wood. "We were about seven hours on scene putting the fire out."

Wood is asking people to wait until there is snow on the ground before lighting any debris piles.

"People still think, with all the rain we've had, that it's wet enough to burn, but last night shows that it's not. It's so dry out there," Wood said.
