A public forum hosted by the Prince George branch of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC) drew about 60 people to the University of Northern British Columbia on Monday.

UNAC chief executive officer Kathryn White was "delighted" with the turnout.

She also said that many of the issues the group is tackling have relevance here as well as abroad.

"Many of the global issues that we face every day are issues that we face in our own communities and we do have some wisdom about it," White said. "It isn't just some grand world table - development is development wherever we are."

Most were university students, but there was a scattering of older people, which White applauded.

"[It's good to have] young people who are excited about it and learning about it and so on, but we sort of need that knowledge sharing of those who've actually seen the organization in action for many years, so that's really quite important."

Those who attended spent the better part of two hours discussing the UNAC's sustainable development goals for robust economies, healthy communities, strong institutions and stable environments.

On Friday, the UN flag will be raised at city hall in recognition of United Nations Day.

The local branch holds meetings on the second Thursday of every month at the College of New Caledonia and they are open to all the public. For more information, visit www.unac.org or e-mail UNACPG@gmail.com.
