The city's unemployment rate stood at 7.8 per cent in July, according to the latest Statistics Canada labour market survey results.

That's up from 6.3 per cent for the same month last year as the number of people employed in Prince George declined to 47,200 from 50,900 over that time.

The number of people of working age also declined, to 51,100 from 54,300, while the number of people seeking work rose to 4,000 from 3,400.

The total not participating in the workforce by either looking for work or holding down jobs rose to 20,500 from 16,900.

In June, the unemployment rate was 7.4 per cent with 46,100 working, 3,700 unemployed but seeking work, and 21,800 not participating.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not show how many are working full-time and part-time.
