The city's unemployment rate stood at 4.7 per cent in April, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

That's down from 5.6 per cent for the same month last year. At 46,700, there were 1,300 more people working last month than during April 2015, while the number of unemployed seeking work stood at 2,300, a 400-person decline, and the number not participating stood at 23,000, also a 400-person decline.

The figures also represented an improvement over March, when the unemployment rate was 5.7 per cent and 46,400 people were working while 2,800 were looking for work and 22,800 were not participating.

The margin of error for the April 2016 unemployment rate is plus-or-minus 0.9 percentage points, 68 per cent of the time.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate part-time from full-time positions.
