UNBC team wades into water challenge

Local engineering students took home top prize at the world's largest water quality event earlier this month.

Local engineering students took home top prize at the world's largest water quality event earlier this month.

The 87th edition of the Water Environment Federation's Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference handed the four UNBC team members first prize in the competition that looked at student design.

Their project used an upcoming development in Star Creek, near Coquitlam, to look at managing changes to water flow and quality in and around the salmon-bearing stream.

In the competition, they were challenged to apply learning based on real-world challenges, with the goal of preparing them for careers in water engineering.

Michael Thiessen, Robert D'Amours, Stephen Bertulli, and David Saabas shared first prize with fifth team member David Houghton, a University of British Columbia student.

The event, hosted in New Orleans, La., brought in more than 20,000 water professionals from nearly 100 countries.

The four will present their winning project on Wednesday at UNBC from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m in room 7-212.
