Fresh off of its recognition as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers, UNBC has been named one of Canada's greenest employers by Mediacorp Canada.

Mediacorp, a publishing company widely read amongst human resources professionals, has been publishing its list of greenest employers for 11 years. The list recognizes companies and institutions that are minimizing the environmental impact of their operations. This year marks the seventh consecutive year that UNBC has been recognized by the award.

Seventy other Canadian employers were also recognized this year, including several from British Columbia such as Vancouver's Mountain Equipment Co-op, Surrey's Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Richmond's Nature's Path Foods. UNBC was the only employer in northern B.C. to be recognized.

"The ethos of sustainability permeates our campuses as our passionate faculty, students and staff collaborate every day to discover green solutions and explore environmentally friendly opportunities," said UNBC President Daniel Weeks in a media statement.

"This recognition from the Canada's Greenest Employers competition is a point of pride for the entire UNBC community."

The university was recognized specifically for its LEED Platinum certified bioenergy plant, which heats most buildings on the Prince George campus through the use of wood pellets. The Green Employers editors also recognized the university's Green Fund, which finances employee and student-lead sustainability initiatives. The university's campus food strategy group, which has spearheaded bringing locally-sourced food on campus, has also helped establish a weekly farmers market at the university, as well as a good food box program.
