A University of Northern B.C. graduate and Suncor Energy director has been elected as the university's new Board of Governors' chair.

After Friday's board meeting, Tracey Wolsey was announced as the replacement to outgoing chair Ryan Matheson, the first UNBC grad to hold the position.

Wosley acts as co-chair of the Northeast Energy and Mines Advisory Committee and has worked with Suncor since 1998.

Wosley said in a statement the position to lead the 15-member group is an honour.

"One of the board's main responsibilities is to work with the president in implementing the board's strategic vision," said Wosley, Suncor's director of stakeholder and aboriginal relations.

"I am pleased with the work that is being done at the University under Dr. (Daniel) Weeks' leadership, and look forward to continued success for UNBC as a top-ranked university in Canada."

Weeks said in a statement Wosley represents strong northern leadership.

"UNBC is poised to become an even more influential and relevant university on the national and international landscape, thanks to our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters," said Weeks.

Wosley was provincially appointed to the board, responsible for financial oversight, as an alumni representative in December last year.

She joins new vice-chair Sean Simmons, also a UNBC grad, who has served as president and publisher of Angler's Atlas since 1999.
