The results are in as students across B.C. cast their votes in the provincial election on Tuesday.

More than 170,000 elementary and secondary students across the province participated in the Student Vote program.

In Prince George, 25 schools took part. If the students had their say, the NDP would have formed government with 60 seats, the Green Party would have been the official opposition with 14 seats and the Liberals would have won just 12 seats.

One independent candidate was elected.

The election results came from 1,092 schools representing all 87 electoral districts in the province.

"In total, 170,238 ballots were cast by student participants; this includes 163,923 valid votes and 6,315 rejected votes," according Dan Allan, director of content for CIVIX Canada.

Student Vote BC is a hands-on learning program for underage voters.

It encourages democracy in the classroom aimed at teaching and empowering students about the importance of voting, the voting process and how to be an active citizen.

Students are encouraged to engage in discussion about government democracy, party platforms and candidates.

The Student Vote program for the 2017 British Columbia provincial election was coordinated in partnership with Elections BC.
