It might seem like a simple storage space to some, but for Avery Bell, cabinet making is an art.

The 17-year-old from Quesnel, recent winner of the cabinetmaking event at CNC's regional skills competition, was awarded a gold medal in the secondary level of the national championships in Winnipeg.

The competition was held from May 31 to June 3 and Bell was thrilled to represent his province.

"I was so happy to win. It was an awesome experience and something I will always remember. And Winnipeg was such a great place to visit," Bell said.

Bell will be graduating from Correlieu Secondary School in Quesnel this year and is he is currently enrolled in a six week joinery/cabinetmaker program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

'I'm really enjoying the program. Lot's of new things to learn including lots of new vocabulary," Bell said.

Bell remembers working with wood his entire life and can't imagine doing anything else.

"I've been building as long as I can remember," Bell said.

"I grew up on a farm and used to build tree houses and then it escalated from there to furniture, vanities and buildings."

Bell continues to be recognized for his work.

Having won the regional cabinetmaking competition at CNC in January, he went on to place first in the provincial skills competition in Abbotsford in April.
