A B.C. Transit bus service between Smithers and Moricetown will be operating by January, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said last week.

It will run six days per week and represents the first leg of what proponents hope is a service stretching the entire length of Highway 16 West, from Prince George to Prince Rupert.

Eighteen women have been murdered or have disappeared along the stretch - also known as the Highway of Tears - and adjacent routes since the 1970s.

The federal and provincial governments have committed $5 million over a three-year period to provide the service to 21 communities along the 750 kilometre route. Prince George is being asked to commit $50,000 annually over those three years.
