Right now there are more than 500 people in B.C. waiting for a life saving organ transplant and almost 400 of those are waiting for a kidney.

Although 95 per cent of the residents of B.C. say they are in favour of supporting organ donation only 19 per cent have actually registered on B.C.'s organ donor registry.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada has committed to increasing organ donation registration and kidney transplants by 50 per cent over the next five years.

On Thursday, B.C. Service Centre staff in Prince George were honoured with an award.

The dozen staff have been recognized for encouraging visitors to the centre who are renewing driver's licences or updating Medical Services Plan cards to register themselves as potential organ donors.
