Elizabeth Schulz has done well by the common pond snail - her study of the creature earned her a silver medal in the animal sciences category at the Taiwan International Science Fair this week.

The Fraser Lake high school student looked at the effect of coloured light on the pond snail's behaviour and learning. Their simple nervous systems make them good fodder for studying neurological mechanisms, she told The Citizen in an interview just prior to leaving.

"The Taiwan International Science Fair was an experience Elizabeth will remember for the rest of her life," her mother, Lily, said in an email. "Elizabeth met people from all over the world as there were 23 countries represented.

"The sharing of cultures was amazing. The sharing of science was incredible. The advancements and discoveries young adults from across the world are making gives us great hope for the future."
