This week there was a sale at Heritage elementary school of teaching items from Sandra Huggett who passed away this summer after dying from cancer. All the proceeds will go to the family.

Friday is the last day for teachers to pick up literary resources and at the same time honour the memory of one of School District 57's respected leaders.

The two-day Teacher Resource Garage Sale at Heritage elementary school included some of the resources collected through the years by Sandra Huggett. Huggett died in July, less than a year after she was first diagnosed with lung cancer.

The resources, which include books and crafts, are sold by donation and all money raised will go to her husband Alan and two daughters, aged 12 and nine. Jeanette Crobar, Huggett's longtime friend, helped organize the event.

"She was a leader in our community," said Crobar. Crobar said it was important to Huggett that her materials be used for learning.

"She wanted things to be used and useful," said Crobar of Huggett, who taught for more than 25 years, most recently as an literacy resource teacher. "She was probably the most organized person I've ever met, but with the most stuff."

The real resource was Huggett herself, Crobar said.

"If you could tap into her brain, it would be even more valuable," she said. "She was the first person in our district that really promoted play and music and song into our kindergarten rooms. If it wasn't for her our district would be not where it is today."

The garage sale continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in Heritage elementary school's gym.
