WorkSafeBC has slapped a local roofer with a $5,000 penalty for a safety violation.

It was levied against Aardvark Roofing on January 16 after WorkSafeBC caught four workers on a slopped roof without fall protection, according to a posting on the agency's website.

WorkSafeBC also found that a ladder used to reach the roof was not sufficiently secured in place and did not project at least one metre above the upper landing.

The four, which included a representative of the firm, were installing asphalt shingles on a new single-storey recreation centre in Prince George and were exposed to a fall of more than 3.7 metres (12 feet), according to WorkSafeBC.

It was the fourth time since December 2014 that Aardvark has been fined. It was hit with levies of $17,531.85 in September 2015 and June 2015 and with a total of $7,500 in December 2014 for three violations, all primarily for failing to wear personal fall protection.
