Two men are in custody after a Prince George homeowner thwarted an attempt to steal a gun safe from his home late last Saturday night.

When the homeowner confronted two men upon finding them in the 2200 block Hart Highway house, they fled, dropping the safe and speeding off in a black Hyundai Sante Fe, according to Prince George RCMP.

Police later located the car in the driveway of a 200 block Claxton Crescent home, near Moore's Meadow, and upon executing a search warrant, arrested Kevin Roy Zaporoski, 45, inside the home, where RCMP said some of the items worn during the robbery were found.

With the help of video surveillance that identified him as the accomplice, police later arrested Earl Wade Johnson, 46. Johnson had recently been released on bail with a number of conditions while facing charges from an alleged involvement in a recent break and enter and forcible confinement.

A stun gun was also found in Johnson's possession at the time of his latest arrest, police said.

The two made their first court appearances on Tuesday and both remain in custody.

The safe contained several firearms, police said.
