RCMP are reminding the public that it's the driver's responsibility to ensure after-market equipment installed on a vehicle complies with the Motor Vehicle Act after numerous tickets were issued for vehicle defects during road checks last Friday and Saturday.

The defects also included cracked windshields, defective or bald tires, tinted windows, defective trailer brakes and insecure cargo.

"Road safety is our number one priority and a defective vehicle on the road poses a great risk to the public" said Const. Lesley Smith with the RCMP's integrated road safety enforcement unit.

"An improperly equipped or modified vehicle could be an accident waiting to happen and therefore our goal was to identify these defects and prevent any incidents from occurring."

The numbers included 145 tickets for unauthorized or off-road lamps - LED light bars, HID and spotlights - uncovered while driving on a highway, which can carry a $109 fine.

A further 112 were issued for other defects.

As well 41 tickets were issued for other vehicle or driver-related infractions, two drivers were found to be prohibited from being behind the wheel and five driving while impaired charges were laid.
