Regional schools are finalists in BCAA contest

Bouchie Lake elementary school in Quesnel and the Mackenzie Community Playspace have been named finalists for BCAA play space revitalization.

Bouchie Lake elementary school in Quesnel and the Mackenzie Community Playspace have been named finalists for BCAA play space revitalization.

Chosen from 500 entries throughout British Columbia, the Bouchie Lake elementary school playground is currently in second place until voting closes on June 18.

"We are so excited to be a finalist," said Delanie Neville, parent advisory committee president at the school. "We applied on behalf of PAC and we were so surprised to be in the top ten."

The BCAA Play Here Initiative is a community investment program which helps benefit children by providing $300,000 to rejuvenate three play spaces in need.

If Bouchie Lake elementary wins, it will receive $100,000 to revitalize a much-needed play space.

"If we win, we will put the funds toward an outdoor classroom which will also be used for community events and we would also want to replace our playground equipment which is now over 40 years old," Neville said.

Along with the Mackenzie Community Playspace, the other regional finalist is the McKay Street Park school in Prince Rupert.

Voting closes June 18 and the winner will be announced on June 23.
