To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the University of Northern B.C. four local artists received up to $10,000 in funding to develop their project called Reflections - Past, Present and Future, which will be a permanent art installation.
The winning team includes Dr. Annie Booth, a UNBC environmental studies professor, Dr. Theresa Healy, a history instructor at UNBC, and internationally recognized local artists Betty Kovacic and Wendy Young.
The call was put out last fall to artists within the UNBC community to submit proposals highlighting UNBC's community outreach and impact, its future role in community and regional development and its green environmental focus.
Reflections features two paintings created by Kovacic linked together with pieces of fused glass.
One painting is called Leap of Faith to honour northern residents who supported the local university. The other painting is called The Future Awaits that includes symbols and icons that represent the university's future growth and evolution, including its infrastructure, academic excellence and bond to community.
The fused glass portion of the work called Landmarks will see members of the city and the school come together to create glass art through a series of workshops led by Young. The pieces will form a path between the paintings, a metaphor for the journey towards becoming the university of the north.
Healy will engage students in collecting oral histories that will inform the work and both Booth and Healy will provide research and logistical support as well as overseeing the glass workshops conducted by Young.
Reflections will be unveiled June 20, 2015 during its 25th anniversary community celebration.
