The Red Shirt Walk of Honour, presented by the Prince George Legion, branch 43, takes place Saturday at Lheidli T'enneh Park near the band shell at 10 a.m.

There will be 159 Canadian flags on display to honour those killed in Afghanistan, as well as local heroes.

The Red Shirt Walk is a fundraising effort for Winch House in Vancouver, which offers a free place to stay for out-of-town Afghanistan war veterans, and civilian first responders and their families who need to recover from physical and psychological damage caused by post traumatic stress disorder.

Therapists are available for children, couples and family counseling during the healing process.

Red shirts are available for purchase at the Saturday morning event for $20 each.

"But it's not all about the money," said Harry Ulch, a walk committee member. "We'd really like to see a big show of support from Prince George."

There will be entertainment as gospel singers from The Way and Street Mission Church take to the band shell stage, there will be dancers and MLA Shirley Bond, as well as a representative of the city and the Legion will be on hand to say a few words at the beginning of the walk.

A Legion piper will get the walk started and those in attendance can make the choice to walk or not, do a short loop or go for the longer haul.

Last year more than $2,800 was raised during the event, along with $2,000 from the Legion poppy fund, for a total of $4,800 going towards Winch House, named after Prince George resident Don Winch, a war veteran and longtime Legion member who was a 25-year member on the board of directors at the New Chelsea Society that saw the need and created Winch House.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the event starts at 10, with a concession barbecue at the ready.
