RCMP officers named to Alexa's Team

The efforts of six Prince George-based RCMP officers to put a lid on drunk driving were honoured this week in memory of a girl who was just four years old when she was killed by someone who got behind the wheel after having too much to drink.

Six RCMP officers based in Prince George were among those named to Alexa's Team this week.

The efforts of six Prince George-based RCMP officers to put a lid on drunk driving were honoured this week in memory of a girl who was just four years old when she was killed by someone who got behind the wheel after having too much to drink.

Over the course of 2015, Cst. Keith McCreadie, Cst. Brian Davis, Cst. Bryan Dunnett, Cst. Dwayne Wikstrom, Cst. Serge Bruneau and Cst. Amy Floyd removed a total of 130 impaired drivers from the road.

During a ceremony Wednesday, they were named to Alexa's Team, named after Alexa Middelaar, who, in May 2008, was killed by an impaired driver who plowed into her and her aunt while they were feeding a horse by the side of a Ladner road.

Carol Berner, 57, was subsequently convicted of impaired driving causing bodily harm and death and was sentenced to 30 months in jail.

"As a family, it is our privilege to recognize the members of Alexa's Team whom have gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our communities," Alexa's mother, Laurel said.

"It is good and right to acknowledge and thank those who individually and collectively make an enormous difference, each and every day.

"In the wake of the tragic loss of our daughter, Alexa, this is one event that allows our family to find some needed good.

"These members are heroes and deserve our appreciation; we look forward to celebrating with them at the four events in our province this spring. "

In all, 246 police officers province-wide who were named to Alexa's Team for pulling at a last a dozen drunk drivers off the road.
