B.C.'s civilian-based police watchdog has concluded Quesnel RCMP were not responsible for the death of a person who was in their custody.

The Independent Investigation Office had launched an investigation into an incident that began during the early morning of Oct. 1 when RCMP were called to a report of an assault between a male and a female in the 800 block of Front Street.

When police found the female, who was the alleged victim, was in breach of a court-imposed condition, she was arrested and taken to the detachment.

While there, she was examined by ambulance personnel and subsequently taken to hospital in Quesnel and then to a larger hospital, where she died the next day.

In a statement issued Friday, the IIO said five investigators were sent to Quesnel where they interviewed witnesses, obtained physical evidence from the scene and reviewed video evidence, 911 reports, and medical reports.

"Our investigation concluded that there is no connection between any of the actions of police and the death of the affected person," the IIO said. "As such the IIO will be releasing jurisdiction of this matter."

The original matter is still an "active investigation" and no one has yet been charged, Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Chris Riddle said.
