Reports of two young sisters stranded at a Valemount Greyhound depot in the middle of the night is "completely and totally unacceptable," says British Columbia's transport minister.

The Passenger Transportation Board will be holding public meetings before deciding on Greyhound Canada's application to end passenger service in northern B.C.

The agency's meeting in Prince George is set for Monday, Dec. 11 at the Coast Inn of the North (Tabor Room) 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"Public meetings will allow the Passenger Transportation Board to hear directly from individuals and community representatives about their transportation use and how the proposed changes could affect them," PTB chair Catharine Read. "The Board will also hear directly from Greyhound about its passenger services and business model that relates to the application."

Citing red ink, Greyhound wants to end service along the entire Highway 16 corridor, from Prince Rupert to Valemount, and along Highway 97 to the Yukon border as well as reduce service between Prince George and Vancouver.

After the PTB published Greyhound's application September, it received more than 220 written comments from people across B.C. Close to half related to proposed route eliminations in the North Central region. About 1,700 form letter e-mails were received on proposed route eliminations on Highway 16.

Those interested in making a presentation must register by completing a form - found at www.ptboard.bc.ca/ICB_application_notices/256-17/256-17-speaker-registration-form.pdf and returning it to the PTB by Friday, December 8 at noon.

That can be done via email, ptboard@gov.bc.ca or fax, 250-953-3788.

Registration can also be done by phone, 250-953-3777, or mail, PO Box 9850 STN PROV GOVT, Victoria, BC V8W 9T5.

A speakers list will be posted at 9:45 a.m.

Hearings will also be held in Terrace, Smithers and Fort St. John during the same week.
