A Prince George man described as a tireless and selfless volunteer for youth, the ill and veterans was recognized with a medal over the weekend.

John Scott accepted the Medal of Good Citizenship on Canada Day during the celebrations at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.

"I never dreamed I would be considered for such a prestigious award. The need to give back was ingrained in me throughout my service career and it is something that gives one a feeling of great happiness and fulfillment," said Scott in a statement.

"You do not need to give away your life's earnings, or really even your spare change to have a fulfilled life. You just need to donate time to whatever cause you choose and anyone can do that. And you'll meet some wonderful people in the process."

The veteran peacekeeper was selected among 220 nominations for the award, created in 2015, which recognizes those who offer exceptional long-term service and have made outstanding contributions to their communities.

"John has been a passionate advocate and supporter of veterans and their families. He works tirelessly on behalf of our Legion Branch 43 to ensure it remains active and viable in our community," said Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond in a statement. "John makes a difference and is a most deserving recipient of this prestigious award."

Scott is an especially recognized face at the Royal Canadian legion, where he serves as a vice-president of BC/Yukon Command. He's helped revitalize Prince George's Veterans' Land Act neighbourhood and helped the Connaught Youth Centre become a non-profit society supporting youth programs in the city.

He's completed countless hours on behalf of community, serving in a variety of roles, including chairman of the Cadet League for Cariboo North, former district commissioner of the Nechako Scout district, and president of the Prince George and Northern BC Chapter of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.
