The Northwest Invasive Plant Council has received nearly $300,000 to wipe out interloping vegetation.

The group was the recipient of one of 29 provincial grants totally more than $1.7 million distributed to local governments, regional invasive species committees and the Invasive Species Council of B.C. - based in Williams Lake - to assist their activities.

Invasive plants are species that have been introduced to B.C. from other areas, displacing native vegetation and potentially causing economic and environmental damage.

"Reducing the impact of invasive species is necessary to preserve and enhance the unique ecosystems we have in our region," said Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad. "This is a collaborative way to fight harmful plants."

The money will be used for activities such as raising public awareness of invasive plants, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating high-priority sites to control the spread of these plants.
