A Prince George man well known to the police and the courts has been sentenced Monday to 81 days in jail for a brazen attempt to steal a large-screen television out of Canadian Tire near the beginning of the year.

Devin Albert Olson, 27, has remained in custody ever since his arrest on January 18 when he tried to make his way out of the big box store with a 40-inch television, worth about $500, through an emergency exit.

As soon as the door opened, the alarm tripped. When two staff members tried to stop him, he pulled a knife and they backed off.

But by then, 911 had been called and RCMP responded in numbers, including a dog and handler and a helicopter. Within 40 minutes Olson was apprehended in the parking lot of a nearby school.

A College Heights resident found the TV underneath his pickup truck and returned it to Canadian Tire the next day.

Olson was also sentenced to two months for possession of stolen property under $5,000 and to 30 days for possession of a controlled substance and breach of an undertaking or recognizance from the incident.

He was also sentenced to 21 days in jail for two counts of breach of probation and one count of breach of an undertaking or recognizance from separate incidents.

Olson must also serve two years probation upon release and was assessed $1,100 in victim surcharges and issued a lifetime firearms prohibition.

The terms were issued in Prince George provincial court.
