Area residents are breathing a sigh of relief after Prince George RCMP's move last week to clear out what has been described as a flophouse for drug addicts.

By the time the takedown at 1837 Spruce St. occurred, the home had become a neighbourhood scourge, according to a property manager for one of the apartment blocks in the area.

He declined to provide his name.

"We had them coming over here all the time, shooting up on our front lawn," he said. "Noisy, constant traffic in and out, parking in our driveways, it was not fun."

He said the trouble has been going on for about a year.

"It started out really quiet and they had the odd visitor here and there and it became blatant" he said. "They were doing deals right out on the front step. We could see it as clear as day."

The raid last Thursday was not the first time RCMP were called to the home.

On Aug. 15, 13 people and a "significant amount" of drugs were seized after a search warrant was executed.

The drugs included cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy and prescription drugs as well as drug trafficking paraphernalia.

At least four of the 13 people arrested remain scheduled to make first appearances in court today after they were released on promises to appear. The rest of those arrested, which included a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, were released without court documents pending further investigation.

On Thursday, RCMP were called to a report of someone being threatened with a firearm at the home. This time they found a small amount of drugs but also an estimated 10,000 used needles strewn about the home.

Crown counsel has since approved six mostly firearms-related charges against Douglas Wayne Joseph, 30, who remains in custody.

Michael Junior Aslin, 30, meanwhile, remains at large.

Crown counsel approved nine charges against him, including pointing a firearm and two counts of assault with a weapon.

A further 14 other people were arrested in the home and released on documents to appear in court at a later date.

The home, one half of a duplex, is now boarded up and unoccupied.
