Under a cloudy sky National Health and Fitness Day activities took place Saturday morning at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.

There were free activities offered for the family that included Zumba, yoga, soccer and soccer drills, a family hike and physical literacy games geared for children.

The event is run in partnership with Engage Sport North and the city of Prince George, Francois Loignon, organizer of the event from Engage Sport North, said.

"We put on events for our community to come try and be active and healthy," Loignon added.

The Prince George Youth Soccer Association and the Prince George Rotary Club took on soccer and soccer drill duties, while the YMCA of Northern B.C. took on the physical literacy games.

According to the YMCA website physical literacy means having the confidence, competence, and motivation to be physically active including Fundamental Movement Skills like running, jumping, kicking, catching, and throwing.

The family hike at L.C. Gunn Park was organized by members of the Caledonia Ramblers.

"We're happy with the turnout this year," Loignon said. "Last year the weather was so terrible so last night it rained and it's turned out to be a beautiful day so far. It's a fun event."

Dana Strilkiwsky and daughter Isabella, 15 months, were preparing for the yoga session about to start in front of the bandshell at the park. Strilkiwsky was sitting on her yoga mat, while Isabella sat on her own blanket having a snack. Strilkiwsky's oldest daughter, Harley, 7, was playing soccer with a small group of children a short distance away.

Strilkiwsky is a health coach who took part in the event because she wanted to be around like-minded people.

"There's so much to do in the community but not necessarily with a health focus," Strilkiwsky said. "So when there's a health-focused event that's when it's important to participate because being a health coach I find lots of people feel lonely on their journey of health so getting together with other individuals that are kind of on the same path as me and wanting the same sorts of things, I find it's very important to create community to support a health journey."
