Medical distress sent pickup out of control

Downtown Prince George was the scene Tuesday morning of a horrific crash that ended with a pickup truck on its roof.

Eyewitness William Boudreau was walking south along Brunswick Street between Third and Fourth Avenues when he heard an engine revving loudly.

He turned around to see the truck heading in his direction at about 80 km/h, blowing through at least two stop signs as it drifted into the oncoming lane.

Just as it passed Fourth Avenue, it careened alongside two vehicles parked by the Northern Health office then hit the front of a third, knocking the van onto the sidewalk as the pickup flipped and landed on its roof. In the process, it bounced off the end of a car before landing on the ground.

"I was going to walk along that side of the street but luckily I crossed before he came along," Boudreau said as he watched firefighters deal with the aftermath.

The sound of the crash drew a crowd out onto the street.

Boudreau said he saw the driver lying in the back of the cab and bleeding from his head.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 9:19 a.m. and Boudreau said they were there within minutes of the crash.

Another man who saw the crash verified Boudreau's account.

"I was just glad nobody was in those vehicles because they would've got hurt," said the man, who declined to give his name.

The driver, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, was suffering some form of medical distress when the incident started, Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said.Crash.jpg
