The long-dormant construction site next to the main branch of the Prince George Public Library will become the home of a 175-room Marriott Courtyard hotel, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday.

"I know that they're planning on breaking ground this spring," Marriott Hotels of Canada public relations director Sabrina Bhangoo said.

The project's developer is Utah-based PEG Development, Bhangoo added.

A sod-turning ceremony had been held in November 2013 for a 170-room full-service hotel at the corner of 10th and Brunswick with a condominium complex to follow.

At that time, the hotel was going to be under the Delta brand. But in January 2015, Maryland-based Marriott International Inc. signed an agreement to buy the chain's Canadian properties. The deal was completed in April following a regulatory review.

By early 2014, a foundation was in place but there has been little activity since then, although a new traffic light has been activated at Victoria and 10th in anticipation of the extra traffic it's expected to draw.

PEG Development did not reply to a request for comment Tuesday, but an artist's rendition of the the project has been posted on its website, where it also says it is expected to open by sometime in 2017.

Rod McLeod, principal of River City Hotel Inc. and River City Ventures Inc., the local groups that own the property, declined to comment on the record Tuesday.
