Prince George RCMP's downtown safety unit arrested a man suspected of trafficking in Fentanyl as emergency personnel attended to two calls of opioid overdoses this week.

Darryl Bryan Tom, 45, has been charged with one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

RCMP said he was arrested Wednesday afternoon when officers went to check out a spot in the industrial area along First Avenue where several people appeared to be setting up a shelter.

While speaking to Tom, an officer noticed a quantity of drugs and ended up seizing over 17 grams of the drug packaged into over 140 individual doses.

The drug is considered 100 times more potent than heroin and has been the cause of a surge in overdose deaths across the province.

A small amount of methamphetamine and marihuana, as well as four knives were also seized, RCMP said.

Tom had been arrested a day after emergency services responded to a suspected Fentanyl overdose at the same location. A 38-year-old man was treated and released.

And later on the same afternoon of Tom's arrest, a 46-year-old female was administered Naloxone, the antidote to Fentanyl, and transported to hospital for further treatment, after personnel were called a spot near the corner of Third Avenue and George Street.

And late Thursday morning, drugs were seized and a woman was arrested near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Dominion Street when RCMP were called to a report of a disturbance.

Police said she was seen smoking marijuana and a subsequent search uncovered "significant amounts" of heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine as well as a "large quantity of cash."

She was later released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
