There's something to be said for being invested in the community.

Cheryl Stewart, an advertising sales representative who joined The Prince George Citizen team in 1996, will take on the exciting challenge of becoming The Citizen's director of advertising going forward.

"Being a sales rep for 20 years, I have a great working knowledge of what's important to our advertisers and our readers in Prince George," said Stewart, who has a long history in the community and extended family that keeps her anchored here.

In her past life, Stewart was a real estate agent and the manager of a retail shoe store.

"I saw the impact of advertising first hand," said Stewart. "I convinced the owners of the shoe store to try advertising in PG This Week (The Citizen's former sister paper)."

It cost $75 to be featured in Fashion This Week so Cheryl decided to advertise a rather glamourous product.

"All of a sudden we had all these customers coming through the doors looking for these purple boots," Stewart recalled fondly.

"That's the power of advertising in a newspaper."

Stewart loves Prince George and embraces the tradition of sitting down with a coffee and turning the pages of the newspaper to discover the latest information about what's going on in the community she lives in and beyond.

"What happens to a community if there is no paper of record?" said Stewart, an avid reader of The Citizen.

"I want to make sure The Citizen continues to support our community and be a strong voice for advertisers and readers. The Citizen is alive and well and we will continue to thrive and support the community through the newspaper, special products, the digital edition and our online multimedia news outlet."

Colleen Sparrow, publisher of The Prince George Citizen, could not be more pleased that Stewart has accepted the position.

"I am the luckiest person in the world that Cheryl stepped up to this challenge," said Sparrow.

"I've been working with Cheryl for 20 years now and I am so pleased because I know that she fits so well into our team, from one end of the building to the other. Cheryl is as passionate about this newspaper as managing editor Neil Godbout and I are and she's going to be a great addition to our leadership team."
