Police are treating as a targeted murder the death of a Prince George man whose body was found Friday near Hope.

The deceased was Michael Walter Bonin, 20, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said.

Bonin's body was found on a rural forest service road north of the community at the east end of the Fraser Valley and 634 kilometres south of Prince George.

From the evidence gathered so far, IHIT said the incident appears to be targeted, adding it's not clear whether Bonin's body was found "where the murder occurred."

Bonin has a short criminal record. In February 2016, he was sentenced to one year probation for assault causing bodily harm, committed in December 2014 in Prince George, according to records.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
