A video is now online of two kayakers achieving a rarity - descending Cheslatta Falls, located 80 kilometres south of Vanderhoof.

The video (pgc.cc/1Mis6jr) shows Mike Reeder and Eion CK - no further details were provided about who they are - making the run. Although the poster, Jesper Sorensen, says it may possibly be the first descent of the falls, Rick Brine of Backwater Paddling, who teaches kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding, indicated that might not be accurate.

"(It's) very difficult, only a few have done it," he said in an email. "Let's hope it stays that way. If not, it is a type of water where, statistically, if enough people do it, there will be a casualty."

One of the kayakers in the video did get bogged down in the torrent but managed to paddle himself out.

Sorenson said the falls were run when the water flow is at its lowest point, about 30 cubic metres per second. During the summer, it runs at over 500 cubic metres per second.
