A Prince George man and woman are in custody on human trafficking charges.

Prince George RCMP said Friday, Jody Lee Burns, 33, and Jennifer Dawn Comadina, 34, were arrested Wednesday evening at a motel in the 3600 block of Highway 97 North.

Earlier the same day, RCMP began an investigation after hearing a woman was allegedly held against her will for a number of days at the location and "forced into the sex trade."

Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass declined to elaborate on how police were alerted to the case.

"It's very tricky because there have been very few of these types of investigations so they really want us tight lipped so the prosecution can have the best chance [of getting a conviction]," Douglass said.

Burns and Comadina also face one count each of forcible confinement and sexual assault with a firearm. And Burns has been charges with possession of a firearm while prohibited and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

RCMP, meanwhile are continuing their investigation and trying to determine whether there may have been other victims.

"Investigators are hoping that the apprehension of these suspects will provide any other victims with the courage to come forward to police," Prince George RCMP said in a press release.

Court records show Burns has an extensive criminal record that includes convictions for assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and trafficking in a controlled substance, committed mostly in Victoria and Port Alberni. Comadina has no criminal record.

Both remained in custody as of Friday.
