In an effort to encourage the age group to develop healthy lifestyles, the YMCA of Northern BC is handing out free memberships.

The organization's CEO said the program can have dramatic impact as the elementary students prepare for the transition into high school.

"Grade 6 marks a pivotal age where youth need a place to belong, feel safe, explore and grow," said Amanda Alexander in a release.

Heading into their final year of elementary school, students often develop new interests, reevaluate their participation in sports and activities and increasingly become sensitive to their self image, the release said.

"As group spirit and influence become stronger, youth seek acceptance and approval by their peers; deeper social pressures emerge," it said.

The Grade 6 Initiative is part of the Canada Winter Games legacy initiative and includes access to the gym as well as special programming catered to them.

The goal is also to introduce healthy lifestyles, create strong peer connections and use physical health as a way to reduce stress and increase mental wellness.

Students can expect an orientation to the facility and fitness floors and to learn ways to get involved in leadership.
