A 47-year-old woman has been charged in relation to the death Wednesday of a College of New Caledonia student who was hit by a vehicle while walking along Highway 97.

Michelle Denise Dac faces one count each of impaired driving causing death and causing an accident resulting in death, both under the Criminal Code, according to court records.

Authorities have not release the victim's name, but a Go Fund Me campaign has been launched in the name of Sandeep Kaur.

"Sandeep Kaur moved to Canada two months ago to further pursue her post secondary education," the posting says. "She was involved in a serious car accident today and unfortunately passed away. "It was extremely difficult to phone her parents in India and tell them the heartbreaking news. We hope to raise money to send Sandeep's body back to India.

"Her father is a truck driver and had put every last penny he had earned to help his daughter fulfill her dream of living in Canada."

Support services were to be in place at CNC for students and employees dealing with the shock, the school said.

“We are deeply saddened by the news tonight that one of our students has died as a result of this collision,” CNC president Henry Reiser said in the statement.

“Our first thoughts go out to the student’s family, to whom we offer our sincerest condolences. We also grieve with those closest to this student, including roommates, friends, classmates and instructors who were with them during their time on campus.”

Police were called to the scene, between 18th Avenue and 22nd Avenue, at 4:40 p.m. and the stretch was closed for several hours to allow investigators to collect evidence.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300, or make a tip to Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800-222-TIPS(8477), online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca or by texting a tip to CRIMES(274637).
