Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty has been recognized for his support of the annual Ride Don't Hide event in Prince George.

On Tuesday, Doherty was presented with a champion T-shirt by representatives of Canadian Mental Heath Association.

"We want to thank you for not only supporting our event but also for all of the work you do in helping pass legislation for those suffering from PTSD," said Mary Lu Spagrud, manager of education and projects for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

The Ride Don't Hide event continues to raise awareness and help break the stigma of mental illness and support mental health.

On June 25 in Prince George, 140 riders took to the streets in support of the event complete with kids zone activities, a health fair, the RCMP Register a Bike Program and a BBQ.

Riders chose ride distances from six kilometres to 50 km.

The CMHA is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year as it continues to provide services for individuals and their families struggling with mental illness and who seek to improve their mental wellness by providing life skills and vocational support services for those with severe mental illness.

Proceeds from Ride Don't Hide will be used to provide mental health education services in Prince George.

For Doherty, it was an honour to take part in the cause and he looks forward to taking part next year.

"We've lost three first responders in the last 48 hours in Canada. The issues and challenges of PTSD affects all walks of life. I'm so honoured."

The next Ride Don't Hide is set for June 24, 2018. Registration begins in two weeks at ridedonthide.com.
