Volunteers are being sought for the Restorative Justice program that works closely with the Prince George Urban Aboriginal Justice Society to make positive contributions to community safety.

The Restorative Justice program is a non-adversarial, non-retributive approach to justice that focuses on healing in victims, accountability of offenders and residents willing to create healthier, safer communities.

The P.G. Urban Aboriginal Justice Society, a non-profit agency since 1997, provides a diversion program for aboriginal youth and adults. The society's mission is to reduce the number of aboriginal people who are in conflict with the law using preventive and responsive approaches.

Cooperation between the Restorative Justice program and the Prince George Urban Aboriginal Justice Society provides an effective method of alternative justice that will benefit the community.

Community Policing, the crime prevention unit of the RCMP, is seeking volunteers 19 years or older, who are community-minded, reliable individuals and interested in making a positive contribution to community safety.

"We are seeking volunteers who may be interested in pursuing this unique opportunity which will include extensive training, to be provided at no expense to the volunteer," said Linda Parker, community policing coordinator. "The time commitment required of each volunteer, once the program has started, will depend on how many youth referrals are received, the number of volunteers recruited, and other variables."

Initial training runs July 13 to 15 with additional volunteer training to be offered in the fall.
