The city will be taking a look at making winter at the Prince George Gymnastics Club a little more comfortable.

On Monday night, the club brought a large contingent to the city council chambers where members of the board of directors asked council for support in upgrades to their Exhibition Sports Centre facility.

The "silver barn" holds 16,000 square feet to service the club's 1,200 members, but was originally built as a military facility, said Dayna Long. The club moved into the Exhibition Sports Centre in 1994 under lease with the city.

"New members and community members are often surprised when they walk in to the large silver barn and find a fully equipped, child-filled recreational space," said Long.

The club has put in more than $75,000 worth of upgrades to the facility, including new flooring, paint and bathroom upgrades.

A 2012 review found that the building was structurally sound, though it doesn't compare to other buildings in the Exhibition space aesthetically.

The space is lacking in spectator and loft space, said Long, but most pressing is the concern regarding heat.

"There are ongoing concerns related to it being an uninsulated building, currently having a failing heating system and doors that don't properly seal allowing a lot of wind and even snow into our facility," said Long. "We experience freezing pipes and beyond uncomfortable temperatures in the winter temperatures and summer heat."

The building is on the city's list for facility assessments to be completed next year, said city manager Kathleen Soltis. But issues regarding the heating can be addressed on an administrative level.
